Comparing The Biker Community To The Jiu-Jitsu Community

The sound of over 1,000 Harleys filled the airways of Muskegon as teammates from Metro Jiu-Jitsu attended our quarterly Alvarez affiliation training camp.

The west side of the state is a destination vacation for many midwesterners, but it’s especially welcoming when you have an affiliate academy like Academy 231 to train at!

As an affiliate of Alvarez Jiu-Jitsu, we have several academies across the state to cross train at including:

Palm Jiu-Jitsu (Saginaw, MI)
Central Michigan Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Alma Jiu-Jitsu)
& now Academy 231 (Muskegon, MI).

The training camp was awesome, but later as we

But as we explored the city and festivities after I couldn’t help but notice the stark comparison between the Biker community and the Jiu-Jitsu community.

YOU ARE WHO YOU RIDE WITH 🏍️

I should lead with the fact that I have complete respect for the brotherhood and camaraderie that comes with the Biker community. 💪

You’ll find an equal family within the BJJ community. A group of individuals that train with each other weekly, putting in literal blood, sweat, & tears into a humbling sport. 🥋

The largest difference I see however is going to be in the longevity of lifestyle.

The majority of Bikers I saw could be found straddling their “hog”, with a cold beer in hand, and a pack of cigarettes in their leather vest which fit snugly over their protruding midsection.

Compare this to the IBJJF World Tournament or even Arnold’s Grappling Classic which hosted thousands of grapplers ranging from White to Black Belt.

The difference would be stark. 😳

The trend is obvious…..it’s easy to become a product of you environment.

If your “Circle” is focused on eating clean, limiting toxins, exercising regularly, & increasing their personal skills (like Jiu-Jitsu)….you can expect your trajectory to gravitate towards a healthier lifestyle.

If your Circle promotes (or doesn’t discourage) dangerous habits like smoking, heavy drinking, and a steady diet of fried grease…..well….you can expect a declining lifestyle as you age.

This healthy network is one of the single greatest benefits of the Jiu-Jitsu community at large.

CANTON AREA LOCATION UPDATE

An update on our Canton/Westland location is some exciting news!

The city recently replaced building officials which caused a short delay as the new inspector became familiar with our current status.

Our permits have been obtained with electrical and footing inspections scheduled for this Tuesday, & structural Crews schedule for Wednesday to start removing steel support columns! 🏗️

We are still on pace for our soft opening of late September/Early October and very excited for our indoor turf, climbing wall, workout area, & meditation room!

Can't wait to bring Jiu-Jitsu to the Canton/Westland area!

See You On The Mats
