  • Queues you might not be a good fit for Jiu-Jitsu

The cliche is “Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone”…..while I understand the premise I’m going to explore a few individuals who may not be the best fit for the sport. The Mental Health Benefits of Jiu-Jitsu Contrary to popular belief, Jiu-Jitsu isn't just about physical strength and technique. It can have a significant impact on mental health. The discipline, focus, and stress relief provided by training can be invaluable for individuals dealing with anxiety, depression, or past trauma. Building a Strong Community One of the most appealing aspects of Jiu-Jitsu is the sense of community it fosters. The gym becomes a second home, where individuals from all walks of ....

From Kid to Black Belt: Jibril Abdrabboh’s 17-Year Journey to Mastery at Metro Jiu-Jitsu

From Kid to Black Belt: Jibril Abdrabboh’s 17-Year Journey to Mastery at Metro Jiu-Jitsu At Metro Jiu-Jitsu, we believe in the power of perseverance, community, and growth. These values have never been more evident than in the journey of Jibril Abdrabboh, who recently earned his Black Belt after an incredible 17-year journey through the ranks—starting from the kids’ belts all the way to one of the most respected achievements in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The Early Days Jibril, the oldest son of Prof Mohammad Abdrabboh—one of our co-founders—began his training when he was just a child. And while many might think being the son of a Black Belt ....

  • How Much Can I Expect To Pay For Jiu-Jitsu?

How Much Can I Expect To Pay For Jiu-Jitsu?

By now, you’ve probably heard about Jiu-Jitsu or know somebody who trains Jiu-Jitsu. There are a LOT of hurdles to begin training, but the one that most people ask first is, lHow much is it?” When in reality, they should be asking every school owner THESE 5 QUESTIONS FIRST. Asking how much Jiu-Jitsu costs is like asking how much an education costs. If you’re self motivated and have ample time….you could learn almost everything online or from books. So it’s essentially free, but it costs your time. (Which in our opinion….is more valuable than dollars…..especially at the rate of this inflation) In a further ....

  • Training Jiu-Jitsu As You Age? Heres 5 Lifestyle Tips Tips To Stay Rolling Longer

Training Jiu-Jitsu As You Age? Heres 5 Lifestyle Tips Tips To Stay Rolling Longer

If you’re like me…..the thought of a packed gym is repulsive. An entire floor of people who are more-so there to either find a future spouse…..or get a break from their current one. 🤣 The “gym” is one of the main reasons I started training Jiu-Jitsu. Ok…that’s not completely true. I got WRECKED in a white-trash trailer park fight….then had the luxury of getting my senior picture the next day with a nasty shiner for it to be forever immortalized into my High School Year Book. After my royal beatdown, I thought the problem was “Well I just need to get stronger. That’ll solve it.” 💪 So I went ....

  • BJJ Gyms Owners HATE When You Ask These Questions

BJJ Gyms Owners HATE When You Ask These Questions

So you’ve finally decided to train BJJ? Congrats! The hardest part is over. Most adults think about it for years, but never actually commit to it. Joining a BJJ gym is not like taking a trip to Dick’s and picking out some gear. Every gym has its very own ecosystem and culture. You will want to make sure wherever you choose is a place you can see yourself training long term. (Honestly, if you can’t commit to training for at least 1-2 years you’re wasting your time). So when you call up several academies to interview them, (which I recommend) here are 5 questions that you should ask them (and some bonus ones) 1. "What’s your ....

  • Peer Pressure: The Beautiful Thing About Jiu-Jitsu

Peer Pressure: The Beautiful Thing About Jiu-Jitsu

I’d like to consider myself a disciplined person. But when it comes to working out, or going to the gym…..I’m prolly like a 5/10 regarding intensity. Unless I have somebody pushing me, I’ll do just enough to finish whatever workout my “Strong Lifts” app suggests. But when I train Jiu-Jitsu….its the opposite effect. I always do more than I planned for. “Okay I’m gonna go light today.” 5 minutes later….Im scrambling in a dog fight like a scene from a John Wick movie. “I’m only gonna do 3 matches today.” Next thing I know I’m locking up the gym at 9:30 recounting my 7 rounds. ....

  • I'll Say It: Wrestling Is The Most Difficult Sport On The Planet

I'll Say It: Wrestling Is The Most Difficult Sport On The Planet

Wrestling is the most difficult sport on the planet. Period. Yet, this debate is somehow ongoing like the never ending barrage of trash Marvel movies after End Game. A guaranteed way to get the online grappling community riled up is to put “Jiu-Jitsu vs Wrestling” in almost any headline. Former high school, college, and even Olympic wrestlers will flock to put in their two cents, followed by every rank of Jiu-Jitsu peeps. Occasionally, you’ll get some muggle who has never stepped foot on the mats to talk “UFC”….but they are quickly silenced by both sides of ACTUAL grapplers. SOME BACKGROUND Now to preface ....

  • How White & Blue Belts Can Produce An Award Winning Kids Program

How White & Blue Belts Can Produce An Award Winning Kids Program

Trigger alert. Brown/Black Belts with fragile egos aren’t going to like this article very much. ( I know I didn't at first when I was first introduced to this concept) That’s because there’s a commonly held misconception that one’s RANK in Jiu-Jitsu is equivalent to their status and effectiveness as a coach. This couldn’t be more flawed….especially when coaching kids. Now…..Elementary & Middle School teachers are already nodding their heads because they know where I’m going with this. In the BJJ community, some coaches let their ego get in the way from growing as a coach…. (while ironically toting a sign at ....

  • Is My Jiu-Jitsu Academy A Cult For Their Uniform Policy

Is My Jiu-Jitsu Academy A Cult For Their Uniform Policy

Every now and then I will see an instagram post, or a blog from a high profile Jiu-Jitsu site headlining some variation of: “5 Ways To Know You’re BJJ Gym Is A Cult” or “If Your BJJ Gym Does, This It’s A Cult.” And some of their points are (in my opinion) are spot on. Example 1: The coach is above reproach and nobody can approach him/her? Yeh I’m not down for that. Example 2: Bowing to a picture of a dead guy before stepping on the mat? (Helios Gracie) I’m also not down for that. But other points they call “Cultish”…..I would have to disagree with. One in ....

Comparing The Biker Community To The Jiu-Jitsu Community

The sound of over 1,000 Harleys filled the airways of Muskegon as teammates from Metro Jiu-Jitsu attended our quarterly Alvarez affiliation training camp. The west side of the state is a destination vacation for many midwesterners, but it’s especially welcoming when you have an affiliate academy like Academy 231 to train at! As an affiliate of Alvarez Jiu-Jitsu, we have several academies across the state to cross train at including: Palm Jiu-Jitsu (Saginaw, MI) Central Michigan Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Alma Jiu-Jitsu) & now Academy 231 (Muskegon, MI). The training camp was awesome, but later as we But as we explored the city and ....
