  • How Long Do I Have To Train Jiu-Jitsu Before I Can Beat Up Anyone?

How Long Do I Have To Train Jiu-Jitsu Before I Can Beat Up Anyone?

Yes…..we have gotten this question. 😂 This is the entirely wrong motive for learning Jiu-Jitsu. But we will entertain it. In short, no human who is invincible. There is always a bigger fish. 🐠 Which is why we teach respect and situational awareness before any fight can occur; and preach that 99% of fights can be avoided by walking away. Now, PRACTICALLY speaking….after 5-6 years of training Jiu-Jitsu it’s highly likely you could defend yourself against 99% of untrained assailants. Don’t believe us? Heres and example of a female purple belt laying the SMACK DOWN on some bodybuilder who was feeling himself. 😆 Professor Mohammad & Coach David ....

  • There Are So Many Jiu-Jitsu Academies! How Do I Choose The Right One?

There Are So Many Jiu-Jitsu Academies! How Do I Choose The Right One?

This! This right here! This is the million dollar question. Selecting a Jiu-Jitsu academy is not like picking out a pair of sneakers. 👟 It is entirely dependent upon what is important to YOU and what YOU value as a student. Now we can go into a huge sales pitch about why we are the best. But to be honest that would be a fruitless exercise. 🤷‍♂️ Because the “best” is relative based on what YOU need, want and don’t want. For instance, we could talk to you about how Metro Jiu-Jitsu offers cleanest Academy in the state (with nightly mat scrubbing, ozone machines, cleaning disinfecting. and deep cleaning 2x/month.) But that wouldn’t matter if cleanliness ....

  • But I Like Working Out! How Can I Supplement My Jiu-Jitsu With The Gym?

But I Like Working Out! How Can I Supplement My Jiu-Jitsu With The Gym?

Just because strength does not but Jiu-Jitsu does not mean that you have (or should) stop working out all together. In fact a lot of our members still lift 2 to 3 times a week to supplement their Jiu-Jitsu! 💪 These exercises can be bodyweight workouts, plyometrics, yoga, high rep/low weight, high intensity training (HIT), and many more. The point is you want to lift so that you feel strong; and avoid lifting so that you are stiff/sore and don’t wanna go to class. Ex: 👇 Bonus! All of our members get FAT discounts at the GNC right inside the Southgate shopping center! They regularly use these discounts to boost their workouts with incredible vitamins and ....

  • "Jiu-Jitsu Looks REALLY Intense....And I Don't Wanna Be A UFC Fighter! Is It Still For Me?"

"Jiu-Jitsu Looks REALLY Intense....And I Don't Wanna Be A UFC Fighter! Is It Still For Me?"

I have absolutely zero desire to fight in the UFC. It takes a special type of person to want to punch someone in the face repeatedly. 🤕 Not saying it’s wrong necessarily. It's just a special type of culture. Not what you will find at Metro Jiu-Jitsu. Jiu-Jitsu is routinely confused with UFC and cage fighting. 🤦‍♂️ And while Jiu-Jitsu is used in both….pure Jiu-Jitsu can be practiced at all ages with very minimal injury. I read an article a while back that mainstream sports like soccer ⚽️ and football 🏈 have an exponentially higher injury rate (by about seven or eight fold) compared to Jiu-Jitsu. 😯 Not to mention...most people's favorite part about the ....

  • How To Improve Your Jiu-Jitsu At Home

How To Improve Your Jiu-Jitsu At Home

I love this question. Mainly because it shows commitment to the art as well as coach-ability to do whatever is necessary to improve. 😊 There are a few key activities that will most certainly help your performance on the mat. 1. Your diet. Firas Zahabi ( Georges St-Pierre‘s trainer.) Once asked do you want your body to run like a tow truck or like a Ferrari? If you want to run like a Ferrari then feed it like one (Paraphrase) No matter how much skill you have if you just killed a chipotle burrito one hour before class you will have a miserable experience. 🤢 2. Stretching. Taking the time to stretch your body and keep your hips knees and shoulders loose will pay off ....

  • I want to train....but I need to get in shape first! ??

I want to train....but I need to get in shape first! ??

You know how every industry has like those inside jokes. Home renovation customer 🔨: “It’s a small job. Shouldn’t take long at all.” Real Estate Home Buyer 🏡 : “I know it’s listed for $200,00, you think they’ll take $100,00?” Jiu-Jitsu’s Version:“Oh yeah man. I’m definitely gonna train. I just need to get in shape for first.” So let me get this straight. Your plan before you can learn a martial art that is specifically designed for a smaller opponent to defeat a larger opponent is to get jacked and thus disprove the entire concept of the art in which you want to learn? Am I understanding that ....

  • Is One Day/Week Enough To Train Jiu-Jitsu?

Is One Day/Week Enough To Train Jiu-Jitsu?

Let me ask you a question. If you told me that you want to get your masters degree but you were only going to work at it one hour a week how long would that take you? If you said you wanna lose 60 pounds this year but only wanna work out one hour per week is there a good chance you will hit that goal? Of course not. For similar reasons we recommend at least two days a week of training Jiu-Jitsu, preferably three. Jiu-Jitsu is not like axe throwing where you can go a couple times a year just to have some fun and call it a day. 👍 Jiu-Jitsu is difficult. (Not to say ask throwing isn't). But people who are actively looking for Jiu-Jitsu usually have very serious needs that they need ....

  • I'm Over 35.....Am I Too Old For Jiu-Jitsu?

    I'm Over 35.....Am I Too Old For Jiu-Jitsu?

You’re just getting started!!! We have members in our adult class ranging from 15 years old all the way up to 58 years old! Age is simply a number. And you are as old as you feel. “But I feel old” Great! The exercise that comes with it will help you feel young again. “I don’t feel old.” Perfect. Then you have no excuses stop you from training. (See what I did there? 😏) A lot of our older members are concerned about injuries. They have physical jobs that require their body to make money. As I’ve said before YOU control how hard YOU go. If you don’t want to go 100mph your first month then don’t. Wade into it. This is a lifestyle ....

  • "I've Got A Pistol....Why Do I Need Jiu-Jitsu?"

    "I've Got A Pistol....Why Do I Need Jiu-Jitsu?"

Ah yes! The age old “I don’t need Jiu-Jitsu I have a gun“ debate. 🥱 It might be best to address a few (obvious) things right away: 1. Don’t bring a knife to a gun fight. 2. Don’t bring fists to a gun fight. 3. And don’t bring weapons to a fistfight. The far majority of the population (and gun owners) are impressively ignorant as to when they can legally use deadly force. 💀 So allow me to enlighten you. The state of Michigan permits you to use deadly force in the following situations: “A person can use deadly force to defend themselves in the following situations: They honestly and reasonably believe ....
