  • What's The Difference Between Gi & Nogi Jiu-Jitsu?

What's The Difference Between Gi & Nogi Jiu-Jitsu?

If you’ve been creeping on Jiu-Jitsu and thinking about it for a while you have probably heard the term "GI" (pronounced: G-EE) versus "Nogi" Jiu-Jitsu a lot. While it may sound very foreign (because it is), simply put it's the same art in different clothes. The GI is the traditional “Karate” uniform. Kimono with the belt as pictured below ๐Ÿ‘‡ Nogi looks more like “Super Hero” attire ๐Ÿฆธ‍โ™‚๏ธ Spandex shorts, leggings, and top: "Why wouldn’t you just train one?" Solid question; it comes down to preference. A BETTER question is what are the Pros/Cons of each? I've provided a short list as follows: GI PROS: โœ… • Grips • Way more ....

  • "I Don't Have Any Athletic Background. Is Jiu-Jitsu For Me?"

"I Don't Have Any Athletic Background. Is Jiu-Jitsu For Me?"

This is a very common question; typically amongst….well nerds. You know the type. The "Peter Parkers" of the world. ๐Ÿค“ And just like there was no PT "Pre-Req" for our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man there is absolutely no physical barrier to entry with Jiu-Jitsu. ๐Ÿฅ‹ In fact, there are lots of ways the “jocks “of the world have a harder time sticking with Jiu-Jitsu then the nerds do. ๐Ÿคฏ When someone has 5+ years of athletic experience.....they have a pretty solid base of movement and understanding of how the human body works. What they DON'T understand is the leverage and physics that make Jiu-Jitsu so effective! ๐Ÿงช It’s the typical example between the guy ....

I've Got An Injury From HS.....Can I Still Train Jiu-Jitsu?

HECK Yes! There are students on our mat every single night who are working around dozens of various injuries. Could be a wonky leg from that final football game in college ๐Ÿˆ , ormaybe that nagging lower back pain that never seems to go away. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ The Reality is that too many people are putting limitations on themselves that don’t belong there. ๐Ÿ›‘ Now.....technically we have to tell you to make sure you consult a doctor before doing anything like this. ๐Ÿ™„ But as your soon to be coach…..”Just EFFING do it!” ๐Ÿ—ฃ ๐Ÿ—ฃ ๐Ÿ—ฃ Jiu-Jitsu is GROUND FIGHTING for crying out loud. The gravitational force on your joints is greatly reduced, and YOU control how hard ....

  • How Long Do I Need To Train Before I Can Compete In Jiu-Jitsu?

How Long Do I Need To Train Before I Can Compete In Jiu-Jitsu?

This is a great question! ๐Ÿ˜Š Theoretically you don’t need to have any training experience to enter a Jiu-Jitsu competition. You could simply visit the organization's website, pay the entry fee, show up and get wrecked. ๐Ÿ’ฅ ๐Ÿ˜ฏ A better question is "How much grappling experience do I need before I can feel prepared for my first Jiu-Jitsu tournament." ๐Ÿ’ก And Metro Jiu-Jitsu we recommend three months. Now, the nature of the white belt is you COULD end up across from someone in your brackets who has been training Jiu-Jitsu for 12 months, and also wrestled throughout high school. Pack a lunch, you're in for a long match. ๐Ÿฅ™ But if you wait until you are good enough to dominate ....

  • What is Jiu-Jitsu? Is it like Karate?

Is Jiu-Jitsu like Karate? No. In fact, not really at all. Karate for one, is a striking art (punches, kicks, etc) Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art. (Throws, takedowns, chokes, joint locks, etc) Jiu-Jitsu involves using leverage and physics so a smaller opponent can beat a larger opponent. Karate involves punches and kicks in the air against……well nobody. In 99% of cases you are not sparring against a resisting opponent. Unless of course that somebody is a perforated piece of flakeboard, in which case……then yes. ๐Ÿ˜ Jiu-Jitsu is the single best self-defense for anybody! It involves live sparring every single class. (So you are familiar with full contact in ....
