I’m not proud of this. ⬇️
“Most adults are collecting techniques.”
“Most kids are lost in matches.”
☝️ This is how I would summarize a lot of our white belts at Metro Jiu-Jitsu after diving back into the curriculum. 🤔
In the industry repeat these ridiculous catchphrases like:
“Keep showing up bro.” 😉
“It takes years to become competent.”
“Only the Elite will make it to Black Belt.” 🥋 🙄
And yes….Jiu-Jitsu is very difficult requiring years of effort and failure. 😣
But what is white belt had a very clear and simple roadmap of where they were trying to go? 🗺️
Such as ending destination which will always be the goal.
A target to aim for. 🎯
So when I was thinking of the type of game I wanted Metro Jiu-Jitsu to be known for…..as in what style of Jiu-Jitsu….
It got to thinking of what got me into Jiu-Jitsu in the first place? 🤔
And It was self defense….I got into a fight in a trailer park in Monroe.
I lost BAD! 🤕
Got mounted and pounded. 😣
Went to school the next day with a huge shiner and a lesson learned. 🤦🏻♂️
Bring it back present day…..I spent the past several days working on a simple “Match map” for white belts.
Progressive positions. ⏩
Positional principles. 👌
And techniques/options from each position. 👊
Now I believe in full ownership.
I should’ve created something like this sooner to make it easier for kids and parents to bring home from the gym.
A clear and concise “end point” for all to aim for each match. 👀
Get the takedown > pass the guard > go to mount.
If you get taken down or stuck in guard think of it as detour from your end destination. 🚧
When I started training Jiu-Jitsu back in 2009, we were affiliated under the Riberio brothers.
Xande & Saulo……absolute legends of the sport.
Their style was pressure passing followed by a mount and a choke. 💀
This “cover sheet” is just the beginning, and I’m excited for it.
Rooting for you,
