I Want My Kid To Train Jiu-Jitsu, But He Doesn't Want To
Spoke to a parent yesterday….. ☎
In a nutshell the convo went like this.
Parent: “I want my boys to learn Jiu-Jitsu.”
🦊: “Okay! Great! That’s what we do. What are we looking to get out of it for them?”
Parent: “Well….Um I want them to be confident and bold. But I want them to stick with it.
I signed them up for soccer and they quit after 3 weeks. ⚽
I want this to be something they stick with….ya know….what do you think?
🦊: Spidey senses tingling
“Are you asking my opinion? Or asking me to agree with you?”
Parent: “No….your opinion.”
🦊 : “Well the boys are 5 & 8 right? I assume they know how to swim? 🏊♀ “
Parent: “No they don’t. They don’t like the water.”
🦊: Heavy exhale 😮💨. “Okay…..brother…..we live in the great lake state. Swimming is a life skill. They need to know how, regardless of what they want.
Combat and Jiu-Jitsu is a life skill they need to know, (regardless of how they feel.) 🥋
Soccer is a game….there never has been (nor will there be) a scenario in which your life depends on how well you kick a ball. ⚽
You agree with that?
Parent: “I do I do……okay lemme talk to their mother and get back with you.”
🦊: Thinking this dude is one big walking objection
“Mmmmkay. You do that brother.”
Will I see them?
Only if that parent changes.
Because so long as it depends on a child’s “feeling” to make good choices for their future…….they will get nowhere.
See you on the mats,
